Colin de Land as Robert Fraser | |
Colin de Land, the Soho-New York art dealer, even looks like Robert Fraser, the Soho-London art dealer who was a drug buddy and friend of the Rolling Stones in the late '60s. Fraser was present at the Stone's most notorious bust, at Keith's Redlands Place, where the urban myth concerning Marianne Faithfull and the Mars chocolate bar - the 'naked girl in a rug' - was created. There is an often-published photograph of Mick and Robert Fraser handcuffed together in the back of a police car; they spent a night in jail together too. But even if Colin didn't bear a physical resemblance to Robert Fraser, we would probably have cast him for the part. He has the right sensibility. He is also a natural actor. Some even say that his gallery is in fact his own private theater and that he is the leading man in every production at American Fine Art. His position as a New York gallerist is so unique that I have heard more than one art collector implore earnestly to whomever is listening: "Don't you understand? His gallery has become his art work!" He really has a look going, Colin. During the 1980s, I remember being at a party for the then-emergent Paper Magazine and witnessing two art critics nominate Colin de Land as the sexiest man in the art world. One of them was Gary Indiana. The other was Robert Smith. I doubt if they have ever agreed about ANYTHING else. One of them - either Gary or Roberta - said that Colin has "bedroom eyes". This is no doubt one of the secrets to Colin's success. So one day last year I went into American Fine Art and invited Colin to play Robert Fraser. I had a photocopy, of Robert Fraser standing in his Soho-London gallery, sometime in the late 60s. Colin smiled and said yes. And it is my hope that his brilliant performance in The Anita Pallenberg Story lands him a leading role in the next John Waters movie. |
