Where's
Brian Jones ? |
|
One of the reasons we chose to center the action (or nonaction) around
1968 is because Brian Jones was still alive then. He died, in his swimming
pool, in the summer of 1969.
I play Brian Jones. This is a conceptual device of sorts, another clue
to the audience that we are engaged with parody, not reality or realism.
It should be apparent to the whole world that Mick Jagger and Brian
Jones are not the same person! It is also a way to illustrate our understanding
of the tense relationship between Mick and Brian: of all the band members,
they were the real rivals, the only two who had a chance to be the 'leader.'
By making them the "same" person, we hoped to sugest the deep
similarities between them, a point easily overshadowed by all their
differences in appearance and in personality. In the early years, Mick
and Brian competed for Keith's loyalty. And in a sense after Mick and
Keith joined forces in songwriting and friendship, it was all over for
Brian. But in fact Keith is more "like" Brian than he is Mick.
How did Mick win out over Brian?
The Anita Pallenberg Story does not answer this question but we
hope to provide you with more questions.
