Installment#2
Casting as Life and Art
Norton Peter Norton as the Pizza Delivery Boy

After Peter Norton declined the invitation to play Tony Sanchez (see Clarissa Dalrymple), we didn't have a collector in our cast. We shot the scripted scenes in Spring 1999, anyway, without any collectors. Still, I really wanted a collector. After all, in addition to everything else, The Anita Pallenberg Story is conceived as a kind of pseudo-documentary of the New York contemporary art scene in the late 1990s. That means artists, critics, curators, dealers - AND collectors. I also initially wanted a museum director to play a New York City policeman - but when I was in London and didn't get through to Lars Nittve, the new director of the new Tate, I gave that up. Though Lars would be perfect! But still, I didn't think it was too much to have just one collector.

It wasn't until we were already in post-production, after Leslie and I worked with Railyard in San Antonio Texas in June-July 1999, that I thought again of asking Peter Norton to come on board. It occurred to me that, even though he had refused to be the drug dealer, he might accept a part that was less unsavory. I know that he has spent some time in a Buddhist monastery in Japan, so he probably doesn't want to represent someone as spiritually debased as a drug dealer - or at least, that thought passed my mind.

Well, for whatever reason, when I emailed him my new plea - to play the Pizza Delivery Boy who comes to Jagger and Bowie's hotel room, he said yes.

He is our most famous star, the only member of our cast who has international recognition. His face is on the cover of all the Norton Utilities packaging - and an icon of him, in a little lab coat, is scurrying around fixing messed up files in computers all around the world now!
